She is the colorfully outspoken daughter of a Mormon Bishop in 1869 Utah Territory. Everything around her cannot escape her critical eye and mouth. She is a typical child, girl or boy, at the brink of adulthood. Her life is changed forever when a stranger, a man no one seems to know, saves her and her older sister from the unwanted attentions of several lecherous army deserters (and Mormon haters) by killing them before too much harm comes to the girls. This novel is rough and fast and funny as only Robert Kirby can write it. This is a book about Mormons, by a Mormon, but not exclusively for Mormons. If it was a movie it would be rated PG or a soft PG-13 due to some language and a situation or two. A great read! 15 out of 17 readers agree! You will too!

I wish everyone would take the opportunity to read this book. Robert Kirby is so gifted, his sense of humor is off the charts, so is he ability to take you to another time in history. I wish he would write more books! I have given this book to several of my friends and each one of them has told me that they "could not put it down until they had finished reading it."Product details

This was an absolutely awesome book. I had my heart in my throat the entire time. Now, I need a rest.
One of the best! Kirby, known for his sharp wit, tells a tender story and teaches tolerance in a fun, fast, and fascinating report by an eleven year-old girl.
The first thing I read after ordering, was that this was the new unabridged copy, but I have a hard back copy and it looks like it's missing he first several chapters. Did I get the wrong version?Don't get me wrong I Loved the book and have enjoyed reading it a number of times but the original was better!
I highly recommend this book. Robert Kirby has such a great sense of humor, as I read the book I could almost see and hear the characters in their drama, especially Rose. I bought and read this book soon after it was published and kept it, reading it about once a year. This is such a good story I never tire of reading it, and now that it is an ebook I can keep it with me constantly. A little history, a lot of humor, and a sensational writer - what more could I ask for!
I've had family members that absolutely loved this book. I found that I had to finish to see how it ended, but it didn't really make me happy, and it wasn't my favorite.
Good reading . Had a hard time putting it down, even for dinner. Highly recommend it.
